African Union extends Darfur mandate
United Nations: The African Union has announced it is extending the mandate of a peacekeeping force in Darfur to the end of the year.
The agreement, reached during the annual UN General Assembly session, heads off a showdown about UN proposals to send peacekeepers to the area.
Sudan has consistently refused to allow the UN to take over the mission.
The UN will instead give material and logistic support to the mission, while the Arab League will provide funding.
The African Union had been hoping that it could hand over peacekeeping duties to the UN after their mandate expires on September 30.
