Israel attacks Beirut airport and imposes sea and air blockade on Lebanon
Israeli planes bombed Beirut's international airport early on Thursday and killed 27 Lebanese civilians in a series of raids after Israel vowed a harsh response to the killing and capture of its soldiers by Hizbullah guerrillas.
Israeli warplanes also fired a missile on a building housing Hizbullah television station Al-Manar in Beirut's southern suburbs, slightly wounding three employees, the channel said Thursday.
In a later raid, Israeli jets struck hill overlooking the eastern city of Baalbek, where Al-Manar has a relay antenna, police said.
There were no casualties, and the antenna was not damaged, they said.
Israel also clamped an air, sea and land blockade on Lebanon, bombing Beirut airport and sending warships into Lebanese waters following Hizbullah’s snatching of two soldiers, military sources said.
"Israel is imposing an air, maritime and land blockade on Lebanon until further orders as part of operations to retrieve its two soldiers abducted by Hizbullah on Wednesday," the radio said, quoting military command officials.
Israeli warships entered Lebanese territorial waters to operate the blockade from the sea, one military source said.
