Syrian minister commits suicide
di Duraid Al Baik
Dubai: Gazi Kanaan, Syrian Interior Minister and once the most powerful man in Lebanese politics for nearly two decades, committed suicide in his office in the Al Marjah area of Damascus yesterday.
According to the channel, Kanaan gave the interrogators a box of documents containing photocopies of cheques and money transfers posted in his account by a number of Lebanese politicians, including Rafik Hariri.
Kanaan was quoted as telling the interrogators that he could not have killed Hariri because the former prime minister gave him a lot of money to amend the electoral law in his favour in 2000. Hariri won that election.
Mariam Al Bassam, head of the news room at New TV, told Gulf News that she does not believe that Kanaan committed suicide because of the report on the channel.
"I think the news we broadcast was in his favour, because we quoted him telling the interrogators that he would not have killed Hariri because they were partners in a way."
Mariam said: "I think the coming days will uncover whether Kanaan committed suicide or was killed."
Meanwhile, President Bashar Al Assad vowed that Syria would punish as a traitor any national implicated in the murder of Hariri, adding he was prepared to hand such suspects over to an international court.
Speaking in an interview with CNN, Bashar brushed aside suspicions about the role of Syria in the death of Hariri, saying Damascus was not involved, besides which the assassination was against Syria's interests.
